Let’s dream together!
Are you chasing your dreams of a better world? Or fighting injustice?
And I know - those should be the same thing. And in some ways they are! We need to tear down many of the systems that are in place that are causing the injustice.
But there is a difference between being driven to tear things down, and being called to build a community and world that you dream of.
We definitely need both of these motivations.
The truth is - sometimes we can get so in the weeds fighting against systems, (particularly if we feel like we are going backwards) - that we can lose sight of the world we are trying to build… of our big and beautiful dreams and visions.
But it is hard to build something that we cannot envision.
And if history has taught us anything - if we tear a system down without something to build up in its place, something else may spring up that keeps the power balance the same. We need to have our vision front and central.
We need to dream.
Black leaders dreaming is a revolutionary act.
Let me say that again.
Black leaders dreaming is a revolutionary act.
And when we are fighting hard or burned out from the fight, taking the time to dream, to vision, may seem frivolous. But I believe that our dreams and our visions are just as important as the effort we put into tearing these systems down.
Returning to our vision for the world can refresh and revive us. It can keep us going when we want to give up. It can connect us to others who hold the same vision that we hold, and we can find partners and collaborators for our movement.
Our vision is right up there with our voice and our actions in terms of importance in activism.
And in that spirit, I have created a visioning circle.
A place for us to dream and to write those dreams down.
A place for us to Write Black Joy.
To write down those visions that we can take with us as we go back out to the work that we are doing in the world.
To use as armour against external attack.
To give us comfort when we are set back.
And to turn towards when we want to be revived.
If you want to dream in community, to gather together for the sole purpose of remembering the world we are trying to create, then come join me on Sunday 21st of May for Writing Black Joy - The visioning circle.
Sit in community with other leaders and activists for 90 minutes on zoom, to remember the dreams you have for the world, to write them down, and to proclaim them in community!
Click here to join us! I can’t wait to dream with you!
