Writing as a SPEAKER
It sounds so much better in your head.
You craft beautiful sentences in your mind. Often they come out as nuggets while you have deep conversation. But when you write, it feels stilted and disconnected from your true voice.
You feel like it is so you when you are talking but you can't get your writing to match. Alternatively, you may think in images or emotions, and find it hard to convey those onto the page as well. There is a danger of you keeping that amazing voice to yourself, or not being truly expressed in writing.
And that would be such a shame. You need a way to make your written words sound as eloquent and beautiful as they do in your head! Here are a few ways you can do this.
Record conversations or voicenotes. This is a simple way of listening to your own speaking voice, and beginning to get it onto the page. If you can actually speak the words out loud, either to a friend or into a recorder on your phone, and then type them out, this can really start bringing your writing in line with your voice. This is a simple but effective technique that I have seen work several times.
Speech to text technology. Similar to what is suggested above, speech to text can be a longer term way of writing longer projects. I had a client who wrote entire blog posts using speech to text, and then edited it. This is a great way to use technology to make the most of your writing style.
Re-purposing content. You might be seeing a trend here. I find that speakers sometimes just need to speak! So if you have created a podcast or video for your audience, then you can get it transcribed, and use the transcriptions to create your written content. You can actually outsource that task with a ghostwriter.
Ultimately, the most useful thing for every writer is to know your writing style and understand what conditions you need to make the most of it.
If you want to explore that more, check out my “Let’s write Success Guide” - a video training with an accompanying workbook - that I have created. It comes with a video that goes more deeply into the topic, and prompts and exercises that empower you to start strong, and improve your chances of success as you write YOUR way.
You can grab that resource here.
And I love sharing ideas, examples and my own personal experiences about what helps get through blocks when writing. Now that you are on my mailing list (and if you aren’t join here), you’ll receive my bi-weekly blog posts on this topic, as well as on strategy that will keep you writing until you reach your goals!
