For the love of writing

Are you a Black writer with a joyful or uplifting story to tell?

I provide editing for prolific writers who want to build strong connections with their readers.

I work with Black writers who are writing joyful or uplifting work of up to 30,000 word manuscripts, who have completed their first draft, or have written all of the content they want to include. Together we determine which type of editing is right for you, and if we are a good fit!

Are you worried that working with an editor will remove your unique voice from your work, or that your message will be watered down  in the end?

Or are you concerned that an editor will criticize your writing, and leave you feeling dreadful about sharing your work with the world?

Are you scared of sharing your newly written manuscript with an editor who isn’t passionate about the connection you want to build with your audience?

If any of these concerns sound familiar to you - I understand them so well, both from working with clients on their own books, as well as from working with my own editors on the books that I have written.

As an editor, I am the silent partner and secret weapon a writer needs to finely polish their work, and turn their draft into a book that resonates with their chosen audience.

What types of editing do I offer?

Developmental Editing

I offer developmental editing as well as line editing (copy editing with proofreading) for non-fiction projects up to 30,000 words. If you want to make sure that your words aren’t all over the place then developmental editing is for you.

Developmental editing assists with the structure and the content of your book, and helps you bring your words and ideas together into the story and the message that you want to share with your audience. Together, we make sure your key takeaways of your book is tight and clear, and your reader can’t stop thinking about it.

This is ideal for someone who has written a lot but wants assistance in bringing it together into a readable story and book that connects with your audience.

This process involves one on one calls with me, where we dive into your book and your message and it involves elements of editing and coaching.

Cost to be determined by readiness of manuscript. Please email me for more information.

Copy editing

Copy editing is for authors who feel that they have completed their manuscript and have refined the message to the reader.

Copy editing includes checking for clarity, coherence, relevance, any gaps (in logic or content), repetition, flow between and within sentences and paragraphs. It also checks for consistency to ensure your voice is maintained throughout, and language is appropriate for your target audience and continuity of style.

Lastly there is a proofread for accuracy, grammar, spelling, typos, word order, tone, word choice.

Cost to be determined by readiness of manuscript. Please email me for more information.

This is for you if you have a steady writing practice, where you have been publishing or sharing your work often, and/or have written all of the content for your book or project, and want it taken to the next level through editing. I love working with prolific writers, who are ready to develop or put the finishing touches on their work!

If feedback makes you run for the hills, or you have a ton of ideas but they are all in your head and not on paper, then you aren’t ready for editing yet. When your output matches the ambition of what you want your writing to be, then reach out to me and I’ll be happy to help!

What is the editing process like with me?

Developmental editing is unique to each writer, as it depends on how far along you are in the process of developing your draft when we start to work together. Once you have sent it over, we will come to an agreement on the timeline, as well as estimate how many calls will be required.

The copyediting process can take up to 4 weeks.

  • First, we have a preliminary conversation to ensure we are a good fit.

  • Then, after payment of a non-refundable deposit, I assess the manuscript and recommend the type of editing that I think is best for your work, based on how structured it is. (This deposit can be put toward the cost of editing once we begin to work together)

  • There is a questionnaire to be completed, and then I then have the manuscript for 1 week, and I return it to you with a clean copy as well as one with comments, feedback and tracked changes, as well as a detailed critique. (I do not proofread at this stage, as there are still changes to be made).

  • You have 2 weeks to make those changes and return it to me where I then do the final edit of amendments and proofreading - for accuracy and consistency. This takes 1 week.

The first edit (copyedit and light content edit, as needed) concentrates on the more subjective voice and style elements.

The second round (amendments and proofreading) concentrates on accuracy and consistency.

I will return the document to you proofread, and ready for the layout!

Why me?

I am a certified coach, and a self-published author as well as a long time blogger and lifelong reader and storylistener. My clients come back because I am thorough and give clear and helpful feedback.

I’m compassionate and encouraging because I’ve been on the other side. I can help you elevate your writing so it’s as close to what you REALLY envisioned so you’re confident in sharing it with the world. One of my favorite things to do is brainstorm ideas! I enjoy the process of stepping into the shoes of your reader, while keeping my editor eyes open for ways to really connect with them.

I have a deep understanding of the hopes and fears that an author experiences during this process. What you want is an editor who respects and preserves your voice, and works to ensure that you walk away with a book that is totally you! And better...
